Cost here is about Aus$20, peanuts really.

Anyway just to finish off this thread, I eventually made the cable
with both serial and printer port connectors and used two steering diodes
for safety, just in case volts appearing on the other connector did any
damage.

Works a treat now.

Only this afternoon I did some listening test to see if I could find
any RF packet. (Home QTH is useless).

However at my favourite /P spot I found an excellent signal from GB7COS
on 29.250, and GB7IPH on both 432.625 (9k6) and a fairly weak 50.650Mhz
signal from GB7IPH.

When packet was at it's peak I would have had 20 bbs to choose from
and plenty of nodes. Those days have long gone.

Out of interest I wonder how many RF users that had lost rf links
and used an internet connection made any efforts to get going on RF 
again ?

Probably no one.
