The net ran from 20:00 to 21:12 UTC

GM4UPX - Ian

GM7RYR - Allister
GM0NRT - Bill

-- Improved connectivity settings
Working with the settings description in the workflow table from last
week, the retry rate between two nodes was reduced by over a hundred
percentage points. A the same time the RTT value has dropped to around
a tenth of what it was.

Working out where each parameter was used really helped drive the
thinking around the changes made and ensured each step was sensible and
tested before the next step.

-- NodeWall on MM0UHR
MM0UHR installed the NodeWall application on his node for
experimentation. A couple of messages got posted but quite quiet so
far. Some discussion about its behaviour was had and possibly updates
could be offered back to the maintainer.

Another user trying to post a second message got their message refused.
It seems to allow one post at a time. No error though.

Further tests showed that one person can post multiple messages so more
investigation is needed

-- Packet traffic south of the Pentlands
Two people are interested in setting up packet nodes south of the
Pentland hills. Some initial checks show that some packet data is
audible but nothing has been decoded yet.

Work is underway to get test equipment to them to see how well their
location will work.

-- Running two TNCs on one node
Running two TNCs on one pi can be done without too much trouble but
devices can swap names if they are unplugged and replugged is different
orders which can upset configuration settings.

Usually LinBPQ is configured to use /dev/ttyACM0 or similar but Linux
can support custom names for USB devices so if a serial number could be
found it could be incorporated into the device name

An example of something similar would be finding the same device listed
in by symbolic link in /dev/serial/by-id

The serial number is disabled by default but can be enabled and
incorporated into Linux udev rules to make every device have a
consistent name no matter how they are plugged out and in.

-- One node offline in Edinburgh for an earth fault in the house
An electrician has been round and sorted things and the node should be
back up

-- Mail backlog stacking up in Edinburgh
Some alledged cleverness was done which may have completely deafened a
node in Edinburgh. The changes have been reversed and normal service
seems to have resumed.

-- Deviation experiments in Aberdeen area
Widening the deviation has improved connectivity between two nodes.
This is being done on UHF where wider deviation is ok in the band plan.

There was some discussion of setting the optimal deviation including
the Bessel Null method though one attendee reported that a particular
configuration proved impossible to find the null even though other
combinations of equipment worked fine.

One attendee also mentioned that they can just do it by ear.

-- NRR command
The NRR command can be used to discover routes to another node.

At the terminal type "NRR <call sign>" and it will say Ok, go and
connect and then report the stations passed through both out and back.
For example:

nrr kilnod
PENNOD:MM0UHR-7} Ok
NRR Response: MM0UHR-7 GM7RYR-7 MB7NKL-2* MB7NDH-2 MM0UHR-7

Note the asymetry in the path out vs back.

-- UHF radio progress in Glasgow
A UHF radio intended for the Kilsyth node has been obtained and
programmed. We look forward to hearing about it being installed.

As well as providing a fast link east and west, splitting the network
like that may also help avoid hidden nodes and improve everyone's
experience.

Over in Edinburgh, work is still ongoing to find a suitable UHF radio.

-- GBR Routing
Soliciting replies to this has revealed some mail routing issues in the
network. I only got two replies last week so if you sent one and I
didn't confirm, something needs investigating.

For the time being I'll keep sending this to all@scot and all@gbr

People are welcome to join the net next week. If you don't have DMR but
want to put in a topic for discussion, you can reply to this bulletin
or to me directly and we'll add it to next week.

If you happen to know someone who is interested in packet but isn't
set up far enough to get this message, please pass it along and let them
know about the net.
