DECEMBER 2014 MISSOURI SECTION NEWS

DALE BAGLEY, K0KY MO SM

The holiday season is with us and I want send my best wishes, to
all the ARRL members in the Missouri Section and to their
families, for a wonderful Christmas and Holiday season. I hope
you are as excited as I am about the upcoming 2014 New Year. As
with every New Year Amateurs are always excited about
possibilities and resolutions for what they can accomplish with
this new opportunity. That said, 2014 is really special because
it is also the year of the ARRL Centennial Celebration. For
those that choose, there is the opportunity to attend the ARRL
National Centennial Convention in Hartford Connecticut on July
17th through 20th 2014. For the rest of us that, for whatever
reason, are unable to join the ARRL celebration in Hartford,
there will be six other ARRL Regional centennial events scattered
all over the United States that will prove quite convenient.

There will be a yearlong ARRL Centennial QSO Party for ARRL
members, elected officers and those with ARRL Appointments. The
planning was extensive and the result is what can only be
described as a massive once in a lifetime event. There will be
portable operation for W1AW/Portable from all 50 states and U.S.
territories conduced twice during the year. There will be a
special WAS Award for W1AW portable for those that achieve that
accomplishment. Frankly there is way I can include in the MO
Section News all the details, but you can check out the ARRL
Website and get the full story. http://www.arrl.org/centennial.
Hope to work you in the QSO Party.

AFFILIATED CLUB NEWS KEITH HAYE, WE0G, ACC

Thanks to all those that have sent news items and/or copied their
newsletters to both Dale Bagley, K0KY at k0ky@arrl.org or to the
Section Affiliated Club Coordinator Keith Haye, WE0G,
we0g@arrl.net. The material we receive is vital to making the
Affiliated Club News interesting and informative. It is
important to publicize all the good works of an Amateur Radio
Club has accomplished so that other Radio Clubs can be inspired
to take on some new Amateur Radio projects. Cliff Rozan, KC0SDV,
reported that the St. Louis Suburban Radio Club at their meeting
Friday November 22 had the pleasure of having Lisa Spahr share
her book, World War II Radio Heroes, which happens to be the
cover story in this month's Popular Communications Magazine. Lisa
wrote the book to celebrate hams and SWLs who helped POW
families, like hers, by sending them messages that their loved
ones were alive. Ironically, she isn't a ham but found the near
100 letters sent to her great-grandmother and felt inclined to
understand how/why people wrote these touching letters during the
Holidays.

The St. Charles Amateur Radio Club and their training leadership
are on track to offer the Amateur Extra class beginning on March
26th. The class will be on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to around
9:00 PM at St. Charles Community College. Rick Crockett, W0PC has
been informed that those interested in taking the course can
enroll right now. Rick suggests that anyone who would like the
opportunity to upgrade to Extra should buy the book and start
reading.

The SCARC Garble Newsletter reports on the success of their fall
license classes which ended November 20th. When the Course and
the testing was finished, they had 8 new Technician, 3 new
General and 2 new Amateur Extra class hams.

Corey Mesenbrink, KC0YNS, reports that the Central MO Amateur
Radio Club, and the Missouri Section has lost an honored member
with the passing of Dale Huffington, AE0S. Dale served the
Missouri Section as the Section Traffic Manager. In addition to
serving as a part of the ARRL MO Section Cabinet, Dale was
dedicated to the CMRA, serving in many official positions
including, more than once, HamFest Chairman and one of the early
NTSD stations in Missouri. Dale served on a Red Cross board and
volunteered for deployment supporting the Red Cross in such
disasters as the Katrina Hurricane recovery efforts. Dale's
fascination with antique radios caused him to be a regular
attendee at the Dayton HamVention, where he never met an old
radio he didn't like. Many of those finds came home with him, and
soon could be found operating in his fabulous radio shack. I
never met anyone that didn't like Dale Huffington, AE0S, all
those that knew him were impressed with his knowledge and
dedication to Amateur Radio as well as his service to those in
need.

Randy Schulze, KD0HKD, reports that the Raytown Amateur Radio
Club is holding its Holiday Pot Luck and Recognition Dinner.
Those attending are asked to please bring a favorite side, or
covered dish and the Raytown ARC will be providing the Ham for
the Hams! The dinner will start at 6:00 PM, Saturday, December
14, 2013 Basement of the Raytown Community of Christ Church, 6231
Manning Avenue, Raytown, Missouri. The Holiday event is a family
get together and members are encouraged to bring their families.
