JUNE 2016
MISSOURI SECTION NEWS
Cecil Higgins MO SM

June 25th and 26th is one of the most important days in the
Amateur Radio Calendar. It is a chance to involve the entire
Amateur Radio community in the 2015 ARRL Field Day Exercise. We
have the chance to practice the skills related Amateur Radio
Emergency Services operations, and hang out with a large group of
our Ham friends. We need to invite guest, family members, media
representatives and individuals that are involved in Emergency
Services to our Field Day site.

Have lots of fun and above keep safety in mind when working with
antenna, towers, and emergency vehicles.

I want thank Thomas Zeller KB0ORZ for providing me with
information about the Joplin ARC special event station that was
part of the remembrance of the fifth anniversary of the deadly
Joplin Tornado. Operating from 6:30 AM on May 21st until 1741 May
22nd, commemorating the time of greatest devastation, the JARC
made over 400 QSOs. The operation utilized two HF radios and
operated on the designated frequencies on 20, 40 and 80 meters.
The Special Event started out inside a gazebo at Cunningham Park
but later in the evening of May 21st, due to noise from music
performances, it was moved to the St. Johns remembrance gazebo on
a hill where St. John's Hospital once stood. The QSO's helped
remind everyone of those that died as a result of the tornado as
well as the thousands of volunteers that came to Joplin to help
in the cleanup and recovery phases.

AFFILIATED CLUB NEWS
KEITH HAYE, WE0G, ACC

The Callaway Amateur Radio League newsletter Spark Gaps reported
that Dan Shaper, AC0WZ has replaced the squelch control on the
147.315 MHz repeater. Recently the squelch control has been
failing to work properly. Should this fix not solve the squelch
problem they are considering adding a tone squelch. Ken Sevier,
WB8SQS, suggested having a back-up 147.315 repeater. There was
some discussion about adding back-up power or even going
off-grid. Ken also proposed that the CARL repeater group should
check out the amplifier to see if it can be turned off to
preserve power during an emergency.

Rick Harkins, WOYGH, reports that the Benton County ARES held a
Fox Hunt on June 4th, 2016. Those participating meet at Orscheln
Farm and Home parking lot in Warsaw, MO. Orscheln at 10:00 a.m.
Rick Wade, KD0CNC, coordinated the Fox Hunt and members searched
for three VHF foxes hidden within a few miles of the starting
point. Using their HT and directional antenna, the Fox Hunters
triangulated the VHF Foxes and then celebrated their success with
a lunch of Hotdogs.

On May 21, 2016 the Jasper Co. ARES group supported the Joplin
Memorial run with communication along the half marathon and
marathon routes. There were a total of 16 members placed along
the race routes. The ARES members were from Jasper as well as
Newton and Greene Counties. Amateur Radio operators were located
along the route at areas where hydration stations and medical
stations were set up for those participating in the event. The
Jasper Co. ARES also placed APRS units with the lead vehicles and
the sweep vehicles making it possible for the net control to
monitor their location and relay that information back to race
officials. There are three digipeaters in the Joplin area. One
digi is on the 147.210 repeater site, another is at a private
residence of K0JAA Jason Arends in Joplin and the last one is
located in Miami, OK at the QTH of ravis Knoblauch, KG5FJI, who
is a Joplin Amateur Radio Club member.
