This in respect of a bulletin from Barry VK2AAB re restrictive
availability of programs for Fob Keys. These can remotely unlock
doors, override the ignition inhibitor/immobiliser, with some sending
personal settings for individual seat position, rear vision mirrors
etc, for say either husband or wife.
I recently sat in on programming an extra key at a Hyundai dealer
and they have a special Hyundai work station, with associated colorful
cabinet carrying all necessary interfaces for cars and keys.
With some such cars it is not just a matter of copying an existing
key. The computer brings up the extra key, and the original plus the
multitude of existing car settings on a spreadsheet This lists at
least 30 items, including all those special things above, plus
security settings, alarm, engine and gearbox management, speed
actuated door locking, climate control air and even the now popular
electric motor driven steering.
Gone is the old hydraulic pump and piston rod etc.
Many items are optional and after all required are ticked, on the
spreadsheet, it is saved and then fed into both car and keys.
So it can be seen that your average key shop or mechanic, would be at
a loss to know how to program these car settings, that include its
keys! Maybe the car would be inoperable
Apart from the cost of the extra key $450, the programming
session costs only $33. Don't gasp at the $450, as I believe some
expensive German car keys, cost in excess of $900 each!
