Re power steering , it is the best thing since sliced bread! Some
20 years ago, although large cars had power steering, mall cars mostly did
not. Also many small cars did not have power assisted, 4 wheel disc
braking.
However small cars have advanced so far and now, as to out sell
large cars and have all the bells and whistles of the big ones.
Another change has occurred in the last 5 years of the steering assist
being by electric motor, rather than the tradition hydraulic systems.
Probably it is a cheaper solution, but it does work very well indeed.
Some car critics say however that it does have as much driver feel from
the wheels. I find however that some driving critics incorrectly criticise
or glamorise a car, but unfortunately may be given to kickbacks by a car
manufacturer.
Here in Australia two manufacturers did at enormous cost,
manufacture a large car, but with front wheel drive. The critics said
they were wonderful, but both cars went off the market in the first year
due to lack of sales.
Here in VK, Ford and Holden remain supreme in the large car market.
Unfortunately for them the high cost of fuel and the wonderful performance
of small imported cars, may lead to demise of our large car manufacture.
Already there are big worker redundancies and the companies asking our
Government for millions of dollars, for rescue assistance.
Then again, so called local manufacture incorporates many overseas
imports of critical components such as brake, steering, fuel injection and
electrical, systems etc. So now it is a world market with even pricey
continental cars, being made in developing countries.
