Hi Sten and readers,
While I can't say I'm particularly knowledgeable about working conditions
(not to be confused with Amateur equipment, hi) outside the US I have
heard a little about Japan. Educational conditions (just worth
mentioning) are so stressful they sometimes result in suicide but they
produce some of the most brilliant minds in the world. Work is also
stressful but they have good ways of dealing with it, mixing periods of
work with periods of rest and a very good stress relieving routine
resembling martial arts practice. Too bad I don't recall off hand what
it's called. This makes for a very long work day, but the factory is a
home away from home and family traditions apply, the workforce is looked
upon as an extended family.
In the US it's a whole 'nuther story, we call it "the rat race" among
other less polite things. "It's a jungle out there.", "It's a dog eat dog
world." and corporate raiders are called "sharks" for very good reason.
That's competition and Capitalism at work on all levels, politics of a
different sort altogether, the workplace is anything BUT a democracy.
Government policy (politics) has a great deal of influence and
"outsourcing" although applied incorrectly has become a major problem.
One of the protests around the Republican National Convention in NY this
week was all about loss of jobs to overseas interests, mostly involving
our very own corporations seeking cheap foreign labor.
Oh, one rather funny bit is that while the protests are going on in the
streets, the conventioneers in Madison Square Garden are having quite a
party (Republican? Hi.) of their own, oblivious to it all. Yesterday that
abruptly changed as protesters got past security and disrupted the gala
event. Now the officials seem to be worried, hmmmmm. I suppose they have
cause, if it were Moscow rather than New York it probably would have been
walking bombs considering recent events.
Frankly I hope other countries are a bit better off in this respect and
mine rises up from it's slumber before it's too late, we are long overdue
for a government and corporate attitude adjustment. BTW, while we can
choose our state like you said it really doesn't matter, the problems are
national, not regional.
