I agree. Hence the maxim. Walk softly, with a big stick. A good defence is
to have a sound one.

I never wrote that of course so you must have been alluding to another.
I agree. In some cases, when sound and reasoned debate is impossible, it
often leads to more drastic steps.
My meaning was that sound debate should always come first second and
third. Only if debate totally should one consider taking less friendly
steps.
Regardless of one's desire for peace, there are some in this world who
will never debate and so make war inevitable. Aggression is not a good
thing and must be the very last step.
Sadly, history repeats again and again and lessons are not learned. Or
rather they are, but only to gain an upper hand. Man creates war. Sadly, I
believe that as long as man exists there will be wars.
