Hi from VK, our largest airport, Sydney Kingsford Smith, combining
Overseas and Regional facilities, is built on reclaimed swampland and a
diverted river.
If one digs a pit out on its grassed areas in excess of a metre deep, it
will partially fill with water and is somewhat dependent on tide level.
To construct the runways huge excavations were made and coffer dams
made and pumped out with a combination of centrifugal and spear point
pumps. These dams were then filled with hundreds of tons of fly ash from a
nearby coal fired power station.
However due to the ash dissolving, depressions occur and layer after
layer of hot mix bitumen are placed to maintain a level surface. In parts
it is understood there is up to 2 metres thick of hot mix, probably in the
vicinity of the old creek bed.
Also when an aircraft lands, a physical bump can be felt through areas
adjacent to the runways, as it appears that the fills over the swamps, are
in fact somewhat a like floating island mass, on the ground water?
