My opinion of the general public v radio hams, based on experience is that
they treat AR as 'too clever' for them and don't want to understand it.

A bit like school maths. I was one of only two 'nerds' who actually liked
maths, especially when it got advanced.

I had a lot of experience of CB in the 1980s and what attracted a lot of
people was that most of their friends had CB. Just a box that you talked
into attached to a 'twig' that you put up on the roof. The only time you
asked for help was when something went wrong and you found someone with an
SWR meter to 'get you out of the red.'

Sound familiar ?

Now, when everyone has a mobile 'phone they are not afraid to use them
because everyone else has one and talking and texting is not too
difficult.

I have had a couple of people recently telling me about a new 'phone that
is on the horizon. Apparently, it will have a button which you press to
talk and will allow direct communication via cells.

(Mention of a PTT switch goes over their heads.)

I know no more about this topic but it sounds like some kind of PMR up in
the GHz. Perhaps it is in some magazines.

Another little topic which is increasingly talked about is 'digital
aerials'. Many people believe that you MUST have a 'digital ae' for when
we in the UK are forced to switch off analogue about 12 months from now.

I did try to explain that an aerial doesen't care what mode of signal
comes down it and, if the have an adequate picture, especially on CH 5
(lower power) then just carry on using the old AE.

They tried to get all technical and tell me just why I have been wrong for
the last six years and should buy a new 'digital' AE or have no picture
when the 'old TV' is switched off. Most of them know my old job but think
I am just too old and out of touch to begin to understand.

So I just change the subject...

BTW my current setup is a Freeview STB feeding a Samsung LCD TV with
scart,
composite and RGB inputs as well as an ordinary RF AE socket.
My reason for choosing it was that I feed it via my DVD RW and a VCR. The
only reason I have them is that I have a large library of ols programmes
on tape and DVD.

The point of all this is that the Foundation licence is the only way to
go.
In fact; why not scrub all licences and jargon, sell simple rigs with the
minimum of controls and hope the users migh take an interest in AR later.

I know it sounds like CB but just emphasise that word Free!
