I'm not sure what the long winded way is because the two ways I use seem
straightforward.

1) Click Write and start typing in an email address and it will be
autocompleted if Thunderbird knows it or you can pick from the list that
appears if there are several similar email addresses known. Then write
email.

2) Click Address book, select name or email address (you may have to scroll
about the list to find the name you want), right click on name and select
Write and then write the email.

Neither seem hard. Is there an easier way to do the same in Outlook
Express?

I can't help with the other problem because I can't see they keys to type a
reply due the tears in my eyes from laughing so hard at the inspired way
you hosed your own PC! Whilst that made me laugh so hard it hurts, the
icing on the cake is that you've told us in the past that people come to
you for help and advice with their PCs. I must stop now or I'll do myself
an injury.

:-)
