Hello all,

I have seen several messages on this topic now.

So far as I am concerned I have used the internet since 1998. I think it
is anything but dead but that doesnt mean that I am totally happy about
the trends of usage. In particular industry and government certainly has
taken over what had previously been a bit more credible regarding the
information originally available. It is now all about promoting all kinds
of ideas, ideologies, agenda. self promotion and just plain advertising.

Those are my views and I regret to say that they would gain little support
from probably over 90% of the internet users. Look at the search engines
which list in order of searches requested. Talk about information
overload! The biggest problem is assessing the credibility of much of the
content and that is entirely in the hands and responsibility of the each
user.

Having said that I would not choose to be without the internet. It is
entirely up to the individual as to what they need. Judging by the stories
of technical disasters caused by spamming, viruses and other malware it
suggests to me that the users have asked for much of these due to
curiosity, surfing undesirable web sites and the use by criminal or
terrorist organisations to promote their activities. There is also far too
much of the cut and paste activities by other media promoters. While this
was not the original concept of the internet as a reliable "Informtion
Highway" I would say that it suits the majority (maybe over 99.99%) of
global users.

Maybe in time, thanks to the promulgation of misinformation it will
mature. It has to be the responsibility of the user to view everything
with a serious degree of cynicism. I can understand the feelings of the
originator of this thread. The internet as it exists now is a media circus
and must be recognised as such.

Be thankful for the freely available valuable information that is out
there and if one is selective there is no need to promote the idea that
the net is dead. As radio amateurs we have benefited from the facility and
intelligent use has enabled lots of new developments in our hobby.

The only trouble is that the number of users is rising exponentially and
the bottlenecks of system limitations are being increasingly felt.

Cheers and
73 - GORDON, VK3XX @ VK3FBD.#MEL.VIC.AUS.OC
