Recent Nokia Communicators run on the their native Symbian OS 6 or 7
operating system which will put any IBM clone PC to shame for speed
when considering the CPU speeds. Symbian is really Psion which is really
the Psion EPOC32 system with a few modifications.

A Psion EPOC32 program unfortunatly will NOT install on the Symbian OS6/7
and you will be rewarded with a "Wrong Installer Version" error message
if you try to install a Psion program onto a Nokia Communicator despite
both file types being .SIS Symbian Install Sytem files.

Nokia Communicators can run the alternative Microsoft DOS/DRDOS or any
other DOS with the use of an emulator called XTM which is available
from http://www.nb-info.co.uk/ and is approx a 250kb zipped download.

For those that dont RTFM here's a VERY quick guide to getting started:

a)Make a bootable floppy disk for MSDOS/PCDOS/DRDOS or whatever.

b)if you already run DRDOS/MSDOS etc on your normal IBM PC then insert
a floppy disk and type "sys a:" to make a bootable floppy.

Win9x DOS or greater will NOT run. You must use a version of DOS like
MSDOS 6.xx or less, DRDOS 7.x or less (free!) or whatever.

c) copy your favourite DOS based programs to the floppy disk.

d) use the makedisk.exe program supplied with XTM to create a disk image
for your Nokia which you then copy to your Nokia as ?:\xtm\drivea.dsk

? is the appropriate drive you want to store the disk image.

I save mine in the MMC media card (drive D:)to preserve memory on the
Nokia.

e)Now install XTM.sis which will end up in an XTM icon appearing in the
Extras menu.

TIPS.

1)If you try to run XTM and get a fatal error regarding no O/S then you've
not copied the drivea.dsk to the correct drive. Your Nokia default
directories (via the Control Panel may be set differently.)

2)Programs that require 16 or 32 bit instruction sets will NOT work !

Examples of DOS software tried:

PAKET 5/6 etc = perfect
G8PZT's Xrouter software etc = perfect (also good for APRS)
G8BPQ node software = perfect
EDIT.COM = perfect
QBASIC.COM = perfect
Miniprop = perfect (HF propagation software)
Old pkzip/unzip = perfect
WA7MBL YAPP and YAPPB.COM  = perfect
PAX.COM = perfect
XTREE GOLD = perfect
GNUPLOT - perfect (I have my rare DOS copy) ;-)
TPK = perfect
FBB = perfect
NOS/JNOS = perfect

Windows 3.0/3.1 will just about work but performance will be rubbish due
to limitations in spoeed and available CPU instruction being emulated.

So forget Winpack !

For other useful DOS programs for IBM cloned PC's and Nokia's I suggest
you have a look at www.opus.co.tt/dave for the best in modern and useful
DOS stuff.

I've tried to run Graphic Packet but that fails due to it's graphics
requirements.

OTHER:

The connector on the Nokia Comminicators is a fully RS232 compatable
comport which means you can connect a TNC to it just like a normal PC.

But you will need to buy or make a null modem adapter which just means
swapping the connections around for compatability.

They only cost a few US$ or equivalent so it's upto to you.
