For a quick overview of the way APRS digipeating works, take a look at
http://vk2.aprs.net.au/digipeaters.php

If you are in VK2, the recommended settings for a mobile setup are:
Mobile - WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1

WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 will digipeat your data through 2 digipeaters, which in
99%
of cases is enough to reach an IGate.

WIDE1-1,WIDE2-2 will digipeat your data through 3 digipeaters, which
should
only really be done if you are out in the sticks and the nearest IGate
is 3
hops away

Any stations in the Nowra area at the moment should use WIDE1-1,WIDE2-2
due
to the current issue with VK2AMW-4 digipeater. The reason is that the
current path to the IGate is: VK2AMW-4,VK2AMW-1,VK2US-1 = 3 hops.

Hopefully the upgrade of the remaining digipeaters in VK2 will be
completed
very soon and some significant improvements to the path reliability will
be
seen.

Geoff VK2XJG

Thanks Geoff for the link which explained the APRS path addressing

I'm sure other beginners will get something out of it too.

In relation to understanding the difference between wide 1-1, 1-2, 2-1, 2-2 etc.

I have stumbled across what I think to be a extremly well written and simple to
understand article about this stuff. (see link below)..

I printed the 8 pages out, sat down and read it slowly and now I SEE THE LIGHT !!!

Highly recommended reading.

For those wondering what the new D710 looks like.

http://www.tech-software.net/D710/

A few things different.

The TNC is in the head.
The GPS socket is on the head.
The TNC is accessable from the MAC plug (8 pin DIN) on the head.
The TNC outputs data while in the "APRS" mode - cool
Menu's are more and detailed.
Sort functions
Weather icons display
PC control - still working it out.
The head is bigger.
Still not sure I like so many plugs on the head.
I like the green screen (amber as well)

Questions ?

Being able to get data out at the same time as APRS is selected is
fantastic, it was one of my big annoyances with the D700. Does the
microphone connect to the head? That was really the thing I did want to
connect to the head, the others (TNC/GPS) I was happy to run off the body.

Can you still run the TNC and GPS to the body?

Microphone = body (left side)
TNC and GPS = ONLY from the head.
