I think the original thread was about unwelcome telemarketing calls
rather than internet spam, but they're both a nuisance.

About the same as in the UK. It isn't the propagation of spam within the
country that's the problem, it's the spam that's received from elsewhere.

Oppressive countries such as China with a very bad human rights record and
illiberal attitude to free speech (like they don't allow it) very
effectively stop people from sending e-mails on a whole range of topics
which we'd consider innocuous.

If China can achieve that for such mail, then why can't the technology
they use be used in the western world to stop spam and trace and deal
with spammers?

A lot of spammers seem to get through the filters by making messages
appear like innocent personal e-mails. ON the one hand, we don't want
spam, but on the other, we don't want to kill stuff which might be
genuine.

I used to get more than 100 spam messages a day with wannado, but since I
changed ISP, got a new e-mail address, stopped bandying it about, and went
on broadband at the same time, I hardly get any.

I get the occasional "phishing" email purporting to be from my bank and
banks I don't use, and recently I got a "Nigerian" spam message headed "hi
david".

It all depends on what you call "Spam" of course.

In the UK, for direct mail of any kind, we have an "opt out" arrangement.
In other words, the assumption when you do business with a firm, you agree
to receive direct mail unless you tick the box to say you don't want it.

If you don't tick the box to say no you don't want it, you'll get it.
It matters not that you may have registered with the Telephone Preference
Service or Mailing Preference Service. You will be assumed to have
overridden that in the particular instance. I'm not sure if people
realise.

Often when making a transaction or filling in a form we'll be asked "do
you have an e-mail address? (EG with discount cards. In the UK, if you're
over 60 you can get discount cards for such things as DIY, electrical and
gardening items). I never give them my e-mail address.

For outgoing telesales you make to buy something over the phone, they're
required to ask you if you are willing to receive information on special
offers etc.

Wise move.

I think we've all learned from experience since we came onto internet.

No Warren - you're an apparition, and your text only appeared via the
"Trojan horse" of Bob's bull. First confirmed sighting for yonks, (except
of course by "other means") but glad to know you're still in the land of
the living:-)

This message to you comes via "diode mode" - it only conducts one way!

That doesn't mean that unseen forces aren't watching you. I like your
tagline from elsewhere in cyberspace - good advice I'd say:

Quote:

End quote.

Neat!

Never know who's watching over you do you?

Ho hum:-)

Thought for the day:
