I think you might be getting confused with the line ring back for 
line testing, something completely unrelated.

So let's start again.

Once upon a time there was a house.

This house has a landline going to it.

On the end of this landline is a telephone, and another, but this time
in another room and is on an extension cable.

One day Mrs House Owner wan't to know how to make the telephone upstairs
ring, and then talk to the person who answers it, much like an an intercom.
