Further adding to Brett and David's comments the following may well be of use
to them.
Within the UK...

Try the OFCOM.ORG.UK site and look for 'Number portability'

This is the ruling that all telecoms companies have to abide by, there is a
cost which I believe is around œ20 for transferring a number, but one can do
it.

On adding roaming to a mobile phone, just beware of the costs, it was
described on Sky Travel only last week, on a program similiar to Watchdog,
but one can run up a trememdous call bill it one is not very carefull, you
must not forget that you also pay for incoming calls at the international
rate plus, which can boost the bill a lot.
I was once caught by this on holiday for 2weeks, and I came home to a phone
bill of over œ200 !!
So be careful, you have been warned.
I get round this by purchasing a SIMS card for the country you are visiting,
then texting those who really need to know the new number.
