….Significant and Major Spring Nor’easter to Affect Southern New England Sunday into Monday with a variety of weather threats that include Heavy Rainfall causing river, stream, and urban flooding, the potential for strong and damaging winds and the potential for coastal flooding over multiple high tide cycles. There is also the threat for a mixture of Wet Snow, Sleet and Freezing Rain over northwest portions of Southern New England…..
….Coordination Messages started early due to mobilization of 100-200 Amateur Radio Operators and a similar number of other volunteers for the Boston Marathon on Monday April 16th which is Patriots Day in Massachusetts….
….SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton is likely Sunday into Monday. Overnight Ops may be required for this event….
Models for several days have highlighted the potential for a major nor’easter to hit Southern New England in the Sunday to Monday timeframe. The exact track is still a bit uncertain but all models have a significant and major nor’easter affecting the region Sunday into Monday. The potential exists for Heavy Rainfall of 3-5ö across Southern New England with isolated higher amounts possible in a portion of Southern New England. There is also the potential for mixed frozen precipitation for a time across Northwest portions of Southern New England depending on the track of the storm. Strong and damaging winds are possible. The damaging wind threat is greatest along coastal areas of Southern New England but strong to possibly damaging winds could occur over some inland portions of Eastern New England as well. Coastal Flooding over multiple high tide cycles is also possible beginning with the Sunday high tide and lasting into Tuesday. The track of the storm will discern whether the coastal flood threat is over South Coastal areas or whether it will affect north and east facing coastal areas.
Coordination messages have been started earlier because of the mobilization of 100-200 Amateur Radio Operators for the Boston Marathon as well as a similar number of Red Cross and other volunteers. Amateur Operators and other volunteers from various organizations should be prepared for the worst case scenario of a wind-swept heavy rainfall. People need to be dressed for the conditions with multiple layers of clothes and water resistant gear. First Aid and Water stations will need to have their canopy type setups secured to protect against the strong winds. It appears the worst conditions will occur Sunday Night but strong winds and rain heavy at times still appear possible at least through the morning of “Marathon Mondayö at this time. Future forecasts will better define when the worst of the storm will occur.
SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton is likely Sunday into Monday. There is even the potential for Ops at NWS Taunton through a portion or the entire overnight period depending on how the threats from the storm unfold. The next coordination message will be posted either tonight if watches and other statements are issued tonight or Saturday Morning.
