The Australian aborigine was a nomadic hunter who relied solely on what
Mother Nature provided. They moved to wherever the food was at the time.
Their shelter would be considered primative by American Indian standards,
usually consisting of little more than some tree bark. They had no written
language as we know it but their language was rich in an image/icon format.
Their tools were also primitive, comprising stone axe, spear, boomerang and
nulla nulla. Fire was used as a hunting aid. Their tracking and
navigational skills are fantastic. Many a time aboriginal trackers have
been used to seek (white) people lost in the outback.

Aboriginal law is unlike anything we know. The tribal elders were the
supreme authority and were not brushed aside like our law is - by black and
white, alike. Breaking tribal law would usually mean being speared, or
the offender having the bone pointed at them. The latter always resulted in
death of the offender. I believe they just willed themselves to death, such
is the power of their spirituality.

Aboriginal Law provides for a Sentencing Circle of tribal elders to impose
punishment on an offender. We have a Sentencing Circle in Kempsey that
operates in association with our court system for aboriginal offenders.
Young aboriginal offenders thumb their nose at our courts but have immense
respect for their own laws and the tribal elders who sit in the Circle. My
understanding is that there is a decrease in repeat offenders as a result.

>Call them simple people...Ok...perhaps but nobody ever looked
>to their culture...other then it ws inferior...so squash it
>take their children...educate them like europeans and squash'em
>into society...ours!

Their culture is so rich and wonderfully diverse and we could learn much
from it, if we took the time to look, listen and ask.
