Hi Audiophiles and bystanders...

Sorry if I misunderstood you Brian, it's just that where you asked the
question "Do I understand that you prefer to listen to heavy even order
harmonic distortion than clean, virtually, undistorted sound?" the words
seemed to imply that you considered one to be better than the other.

Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Ritchie Blackmore, and Jimmy Page,
all favoured Marshall amps and Jim Marshall must have been feeling very
pleased at producing items that held such a following. Interestingly, the
current Marshalls still have that sweet mellifluous sound which must have
been the reason for their success.

Ah, Wireless World. It was my favourite magazine Brian and instrumental in
my constructing a splendid pair of Bailey Transmission Line Monitors with
the triangular line. They sounded so excellent that I built another half
dozen at friends' requests, some are still using them.

I have several different makes of speakers including floorstanding TSL's
with carbon drive units. I tend to listen to the Quad ESL's these days as
they give a natural sound and don't bother my neighbours. My pre-amp does
not have any tone controls (a form of Graphic Equalizer!) and over the
last few years I have found myself just enjoying the music, so I must have
ended up with the system that is just right for *me* and it has taken me
numerous years and vast amounts of cash to arrive at this point!

Yes, from an academic point Brian, I would be interested to read the
details of how you achieve such a high damping factor. I'm sure there must
be others interested too.

Finally, you ask if I "believe in the theory of gold plated connectors and
special wire having an effect on sound quality?"

Yes and No! I have yet to hear any cable conduct more detailed sound than
30 Amp Cooker Wire, although I use short lengths of QED silver speaker
wire now. For any low level interconnects, I am of the opinion that silver
plated oxygen free copper, transfers the most detail. Gold plated plugs
and connectors simply offer long term conductivity compared with plain
fittings which will, over time, oxidise and give poorer contact.

I was quite fanatical at one time Brian, even to the extent of regularly
polishing the brass pins of 13 Amp plugs to gain that last iota of sound
quality!

I still believe that mains filtering is beneficial and this explains why
listening late at night seems more fulfilling as TV's, fridges, and other
devices that pollute power supplies fall silent.

The best solid state sound I ever heard was from a Crown Amp that was
powered by a bank of NiCad batteries. (Big tall cells)

You asked me a question, I'd like to ask you one. Do you prefer the DC
coupled output stage such as Lindsley Hood uses OR high quality output
transformers? Apart from the fiddly biasing adjustment required, I must
admit that DC coupling does produce awesome bass!

Regards
