Whilst it may be regrettable that Packet isn't now always carried by
traditional Ham Radio Waves, I still see Telnet as a marvel above and
beyond, my limited reasoning.
When I ask my Winpac to connect to a BBS maybe in my State, or over in
VK6 or perhaps Zl, a wondrous sequence of events occur.
Firstly I use a wireless UHF modem, that connects by radio to a phone
tower and in the blink of an eye a wondrous line of communication occurs!
It travels by radio from tower to tower and then into a server, that sees
the IP address and it goes to a Telstra exchange and is processed by an
internet router?.
There it is decided that the best link maybe via satellite microwaves,
to far distant places. Again downloading into an exchange and finally to
the responsive, Telnetting BBS.
All of this is maybe above and beyond the old thinking of HF or VHF
direct radio links.
So not having repeater links available here now, I mentally revel in the
miracle of Telnet, to a distant BBS, as when I hit the Winpac mailbox,
action occurs even faster than the blink of an eye.
My screen fills with a string of headers. Maybe too they is data of a 7+
picture from ZL1ABS and suddenly Winpac tells me there in a message that
the picture is downloaded.
I can carry on with messages to Packet friends via BBS's and enjoy that
they are amateurs,all bonded by our great ham fraternity, Woof Hong and
all!
Maybe I am going a bit soft, having turned 80 at my last birthday, but to
take communication even further, would you believe, I just as much enjoy
an Echolink or strangely enough a phone conversation with a fellow ham,
Summing up I think that Ham Radio, Packet, Telnet, Echolink, is all
about hams communicating with hams and since I was licensed over 60 years
ago, I have maybe mellowed, to be more philosophical and enjoy a chat, any
which way ever!
I therefore don't think we should bury our heads in the sand, but embrace
any manner of communication, with other hams. We have a strong bond and we
must ensure, that we don't loose it.
