As I have mentioned in previous bulletins we get deluged with programmes
about WWII and, yes, it does get quite boring.

The other day I caught part of a programme which showed a radar operator
in a bomber. It suddenly occured to me that the two radar screens in front
of him were at least 20" in diameter. One was a typical PPI display
meaning a rotating dish on the ac somewhere and I do know that Lancasters
did have these under the fuselage around 1942/3.

What I hadn't thought of before was the size of the displays.

As we all know radar and TV are closely related so why, if they had 20"
radar screens Ca 1942 did TV after the war start with 8" and 9" screens
then increase to about 17" by 1959 ?

BTW the screens were circular but, even with a 4:3 mask, that means at
least 19" for a TV picture. Just one of electronics little mysteries, I
suppose. Using the internet doesn't help, all we get are various mentions
of history. The prog was not about electronics, it seemed to be something
about bombing, I hadn't seen the start and changed channel after a couple
of minutes- as I said, all these WWII progs get very boring.....
