Hi Ian and all,

Oh L, pirate radio began the day after Lee DeForest invented the triode
valve, he called it the Audion, Edison called it a few things unprintable.
Why? He discovered the Edison effect, essentially he invented the diode but
didn't know what to do with it. The reason why pirates waited for the Audion
is because Pohlsen's singing arc was too scary for amateurs. Well, Amateurs
came later but amateurs were pioneers.

Oh not puzzling at all, the UK government disavowed pirates' existance until
Caroline came along, the most famous pirate of all time. It even overshadowed
WUMS, We're an Unidentified Mysterious Station operating from an Ohio River
steamer, a story in itself.

I might as well 'fess up too since the statute of limitations ran out long
ago, in 1965 I copied WUMS (didn't know it's an FM station on the campus of
Mississippi University) and from its dim beginnings as a milliwatt "phono
oscillator" to a 200W almost legal Class 4 station rocked the NYC metro area
until its demise in 1971. I must give credit where credit is due, thanks ARRL
for your very helpful Radio Amateur's Handbook for without it radio piracy
would be far more difficult.

Interesting, we both did record requests but my friends and I did it in
style. We used 5 phone boxes in a nearby city, 4 sequential numbers and an
oddball, we gave them out over the air for call-ins and called the odd one
from the "studio" to copy the requests coming in. There were records all over
the place all Saturday afternoon with us scrambling about, when the dust
settled in 5the evening I tallied up all the individual calls (weeded out
duplicate calls and callers) and discovered more than 400 pwer hour! DAYUM!
I'll bet none of the big boys ever got so many! Oh, we were the flagship
station in an ad hoc network that sprang up around us, AM and FM pirates
ruled the waves until the FCC put the kibosh on it.

That BTW is the Readers Digest condensed version, the whole story is WAY too
long to relate here but it was fun while it lasted. The windup is one other
goof I was unaware of when the station signed on and off, also appeared on
our QSL, owned and operated by Broadcasting Affiliates Incorporated. That BTW
is WBAI in New York. Oh well, at least Powzap Studios and a Bustaneardrum
Production were original. (;->)

WHY did the BBC say pirate radio started in 1967? Because Auntie is the Pope
of radio, infallible AND the government ruling from Broadcast House, London.
Even the queen bows to Auntie Beeb, without her only those who assemble along
the Royal Route would get to see the Coronation Carriage or hear her speak,
Auntie rules. She said 1967 but we know better, just don't tell her I said
so. (;->)
