I have also just purchased Pmap V8 and I think that this is the most frustrating software I have ever purchased. Where can I find the file PmapServer7.INF needed to copy to the UI view 32 directory?

Thank you for any help, captainreiner@yahoo.com

That is not correct. There are separate instructions for doing an
install of PMap 8 on a machine that is a fresh install compared to
one that previously had PMap 7 on it.

See http://www.ui- view.org/ uiview32/ PrecisionMapping 8.htm
or http://wa8lmf. net/aprs/ pmap8_notes. htm. Given that you installed
PMap 8, removed it and then installed PMap 7, I'm not sure which
set of instructions would apply in your case - hi!

Yes, for new users the installation of Precision Mapping V8 and the
PmapServer V7 to use with UI-View32 can be frustrating. When I did my
first install back with Pmap V6, I web searched for every page about the
combination I could find, then printed out the available installation
information, used the paper copy as a checklist and actually checked off
each step as I went.

New users should keep in mind they are installing a very unique
combination of software, actually three separate applications that
provide a unique capability to APRS operators. Unlike the integrated
software products available from the Borg, YOU need to do the hard
work to get the combination functioning. Your succesful installation
will give you access to maps and pan and zoom capabilities that are
unmatched.

Based on Stepen Smiths' instruction page;
http://wa8lmf.net/aprs/pmap8_notes.htm, the !!PmapServer7.INF file is
created by the PmapServer installation process and is then copied
automatically when you are running that installation. If you have
freelanced the installation process and it has failed you may need to do
a file search for the file you need and locate it on your computer that
way. Or perhaps erase everything and reinstall from the beginning.

The Precision Mapping Streets and Trips software is a proven useful
product for the purposes it is written for. Any problems with its use
with UI-View are normally not related to the Undertow software or to
UI-View itself. Most problems are related to not following the
PmapServer installation sequence or directions. That stems from the
nature of the PmapServer as a third party add on which allows UI-View to
access the Precision Mapping map data files.

Have you gone to either www.ui-view.org/uiview32/PrecisionMapping8.htm
or http://wa8lmf.net/aprs/pmap8_notes.htm and followed the instructions?

What makes you think that you need to manually copy PmapServer7.INF
(the filename is actually !!PmapServer7.INF) to anywhere? It should
already be there. After the installation, if you look in both the
PMapServer7 installation folder, and in the MAPS folder below where
you installed UI-View, you should see a copy of !!PmapServer7.INF.

What you do have to manually copy is MapPro71.cfg, but to the
PMapServer7 installation folder, not to the UI-View installation folder
or anywhere below it.

In fairness, perhaps the instructions could be re-worded a bit. In
Edgar's case, we know he didn't follow the instructions. We can only
presume that you did. However, If you followed them, it would already be
working. Just to check that, go to MAP - LOAD A MAP (or hit F2) do you
see "Precision Mapping V7 Server" in the list? Perhaps UI-View is just
waiting for you to tell it to use PMapServer 7.

If you have problems, don't just tell us it is frustrating. Tell us at
what stage you had a problem... if any. No-one is forcing you to use
UI-View or PMapServer 7. However there are many people on this list
successfully using them with the benefit of street level maps that are
scrollable and zoomable. Pretty nifty.

If you had given a callsign, we could have looked to see if you were
beaconing a position. What is the callsign you have entered in UI-View
and same question for your mobile station.

Have you inadvertently hit control-F5? That would toggle off all symbols
though. not just your own.

Do you have anything in Exclude / Include Lists?

Look at your station setup. Is your proper lat/long entered? What is the
beacon rate? Are you beaconing on RF or via TCPIP only?

Do you have UI-View connected to an APRS server or is it on RF only?

No matter what, you said you "lost your home & mobile icon". Did you
have UI-View set to only show yourself and your mobile station? That
would give you an uncluttered screen, but you sure wouldn't learn much
about what was going on around you.

Do you see any stations in the station list?

Do you see any data rolling in on the terminal window? Check OPTIONS -
FILTER to make sure you aren't excluding the data from RF or TCPIP as he
case might be.

> > I have gone through resetting the station but no luck.

What does that mean? Do you mean you re-entered your position? I don't
understand.

Is it just me or is everyone that is getting a stupid message from
SparkLIST.com every time they post to the list? It says...

"The following lines in your email message did not appear to be
SparkLIST.com commands and were skipped:"

and then repeats the whole meassage and then...

"This email message is simply a notification of how SparkLIST.com
understood your email message. If you want to resend your commands,
send them to sparklist @ sonic.sparklist.com"

Obviously I'm not going to do anything like that. If "SparkLIST.com"
means something to anyone on this list, please fix it!!!

I have installed PMap8.0 and PMap Server7 as per instructions on website. When I attempt to load the Precision Mapping Maps in UI-View, I get error message stating I do not have map server registered on you 'puter called PMaperver.dll. Precision Mapping is registered and working OK by itself. What am I not doing??

Thanks,

You probably did everything correctly. Some people, myself included, had
PMap 7 properly installed and registered, but still had the warning
about it not being registered when starting PMapServer 7. A quick phone
call to Undertow gave me a registration number to enter and that was
that. If you already did the online registration at registermyapp.com,
try giving Undertow a shout during business hours and I'm sure they will
get you fixed up.

In UI-View go to Maps-> PmapServer7 Help
Click on "Index" tap
Double click "Registration"

"When you first run PmapServer6, you will be prompted to register it. You
are registering with UnderTow Software the fact that you are using a product
which uses MapPro60.OCX. It costs you nothing, it is a requirement of my
development licence from UnderTow, and it is in no way related to your
UI-View32 registration. Follow the onscreen instructions."

You have to go through the registration process again. You can do it
online. You will get a different registration number.

I know that is what is in the UI-View help, and that it won't be
updated. However, that was written by Roger before PMapServer 7
existed. There is no registration for PMapServer 7 - just for PMap 7
or the newer PMap 8 (Precision Mapping 7 or 8) as the case may be.

Keith
Read the rest of the help. You are not registering Pmap Server 7, you are
registering the OCX file that you moved into the Pmap Server file. I had
the same problem with Pmap Server 7 when I first installed it. I kept
getting the registration box when I would try to run it. I asked about it
on this reflector, and someone responded of list to check the "Help" files
under registration. I registered again and everything works flawlessly.
Several people have said on this list to call Undertow when the registration
screen pops up and they will take care of it. I'm saying you can do it
yourself over the internet. I have done it on three machines; one WinXP and
two Vista Homes.

I thought that is what I said:

"There is no registration for PMapServer 7 -
just for PMap 7 or the newer PMap 8"

Note that "PMap 7" and "PMap 8" (and indeed PM7 & PM8) are common
abbreviations on this list for Precision Mapping 7 and 8 - not for
PMapServer 7.

Would you care to share how to do this? I have been one of the people
suggesting that a phone call to Undertow will take care of the
registration. I would find this information useful myself.

6a. UI-View and Precision Mapping V8.0
Posted by: "Len Kreyer" n9qip@centurytel.net n9qip
Date: Sat Feb 23, 2008 9:47 pm ((PST))

Hi Group,
Recently I had a HD failure on one of my notebooks and had to purchase
a cheap Vista notebook to fill the bill.
I installed UI-View and PM 6.0 only because I know it works.
When I tried to re-register the V6.0 I got the silly message that says
I can only trasnsfer the registration...so I try that...Nope! Undertow
now says that I have to upgrade to V8.0 and PM 7.0.
So I purchase V8.0 and install per the detailed instructions. I
finally got error message about dll problem with registration.
Since I couldn't get the V8.0 to work, I then opened Precision Mapping
alone, which did work properly and found the maps grossly out of date.
I'm talking roads that have been Interstates for over 4 years still
shown as state 2-lane highways.
I demanded my money back along with my ability to re-register/transfer
registration to my new vista machine.
So far I got the registration on V6.0 to transfer but no $ back yet.
Someone needs to come up with an alternative to Undertow's product.

It's too bad you couldn't get it to work. Many others (thousands?)
have had better success. It does require following several steps.
Some including myself have had to phone and get a registration
number even though the online registration worked OK.

> > I then opened Precision Mapping alone, which did work

Companies that put mapping products together don't go out an survey
the world. They can only work with the data they are given to work
with. I know what you mean because there is a road near where I live
that doesn't show up on most maps.

I would be surprised if they refunded you just because you couldn't get
PMapServer 7 to work, but it can't hurt to ask. You might want to share
with others how to get PMap 6 registered in case there are others that
want to use it.

For a "free" mapping solution you could look at the map server
by Chris PA7RHM. You can download it from his website at
http://home.planet.nl/~chrisvangorp or you could get an older
version which allows you to save the maps for use when you
aren't online from www.wa8lmf.net/aprs/UIview_Notes.htm.
