Uh ok now we all know what Conelrad was about - saving the stockpiles
of Fattyburgers and fries from poorly paid and hungry Russian Soldiers ;-)

So America was scared that those pesky Red Bears would home in on
amateur signals.

Well the Russian's were too clever for that, they came up with a
cunning plan powered by Ultra UW3DI technology which made all their own
amateur signals wobble up and down the bands - that way US missiles
could never lock on to Russian hams signals in retaliation.

But soon Yaesu Allies with their VFO's spinning on their own axis of
evil invented the *RIT*.

Yep - the Japs gave the free world the (R)ussian (I)ndependant (T)uning
system. It was so good that you could track a Russki from one end of
15m to the other in just one single turn ;-)

However the US DoD came up with a homegrown system called Emergency
Broadcasting system which fitted in perfectly with US Trade Protectionism
Policy.

Now instead of hiding under tables when your local AM broadcast station
went
QRT - these stations were left on the air sending recorded messages
instructing it's citizens that anyone not guarding the nation's fattyburger
stockpiles was un-American.

The radio industry was happy too as it didn't leave large gaps between
the commercials.

OK..urine extraction apart (it similar to irony - which is definatly
un-American) I also hear that the US had some form of internal
navigation system which anyone could use. I assume that this was
obviously a forerunner of GPS and based upon land based transmitters.

But how did it really work and what information was available to the
user?

Surely a user didn't need a receiver/directional antenn/map and compass
to use the system ?

Or did they ?
