Subject: RE: VI5JAM & New Amateurs
I thought amateurs in VK, WICEN and other groups might like to see the
attached message from Stephen Watson to Lea Adcock. I am placing this
message on the packet system with approval from Lea. Stephen Watson
(VK4SGW National Co-ordinator JOTA/JOTI National JOTA/JOTI website
http://www.scouts.com.au/international/jotafront.html ) sent the attached
message to Lea Adcock, the person responsible for organising the Scout
Station at the recent Jamboree held in the Adelaide Hills in early January
2004. As one of the local operators in a slightly larger group, which
included some interstate and overseas operators, I wanted to indicate how
good I thought the event was for the young people. I also wanted to say
how much I enjoyed the privilege of participating in this event. We need
more amateurs who could contribute to events such as this in the future.

Lea,

Congratulations on a very successful station which added much to the
Jamboree and placed the profile of Radio Scouting firmly in the mainstream
of Scouting in Australia.

To compare VI5JAM with past events I have had involvement with:

18th Australian Jamboree - Large amateur station with lots of operators
mostly on HF and some local VHF. Result - Almost no DX, very few
Australian contacts, one or two Scouting contacts. A solar storm wiped
out HF totally for three days. I was an operator at the station.

19th Australian Jamboree - A station planned and publicised by the NSW
team did not happen despite a permanent fully operational and equipped
facility being present at the campsite. Result - No amateur radio
presence.

Australian Rover Moot JAN 2002 - A station strongly supported by local
club with HF and VHF. Result - almost no contacts throughout the event.
I contacted the station from my home in Townsville every day to give them
someone to talk to.

20th World Scout Jamboree - A large team of Internationals with a variety
of bases. Communications out consisted of three HF radios and packet.
Two of the HF radios did not work and the other only put out 10 watts when
it wanted to. Very difficult communications. Frank had prepared SSTV but
could only do an off-air demonstration.

You can see from this that your station achieved where others failed.

Some significant aspects of VI5JAM which were obvious to me at a distance
tied up with other responsibilities were:

1. The presence of an international team in Barbara and Alan
2. Lots of Scouts asked me each day how to get to 'JOTA'
3. That you were on the card
4. Inclusion in the Jamboree song
5. The use of internet modes as a mainstay and the spectacular results
6. That you had a badge
7. Great facilities
8. I heard of many contacts with scouts throughout the world

Once again congratulations and thankyou for the effort and sacrifice made
by you and the team. You should all be justifiably proud of your
achievements.

Steve
