I suspect that it may only be of use when physical RAM is low ?

When I last ried it I seem to recall that data is compressed into ram and
then uncompressed when needed, much like files on a hard disk.

Now on my non ramboosted machine:-

What I find strange is that when I see what's going on with my machine,
I have 18meg of swappable physical ram and yet it still seems to hold 
the contents in physical ram instead of making room when my ram is low.

Why doesn't the memory mangler (manager) sense I have low ram, swap the
"swappable" ram into virtual ram (swapfile) and allow the ram to be used
for my other purposes ?

Another Bill Gates stuff up ?

Geez, 32 meg of ram and all I can run is Win98se, AGW and Winpack before
my machine falls over.

What a joke.
