                          Ultraparadoxicality..

The longest, ordinary word I have found in English:

I first ran into this word when I was studying 'Motivational Research' a
branch of psychology based on begaviourist technics and partly on the Russian
'Brain Washing' which was talked about a lot at this time.

If you browse for MR, all you will find is that it is a simple branch of
applied psychology, only used in advertising. The truth is that MR was adapted
by the police into a type of interrogation technique, the military used it,
renamed psychological warfare, something much more innocent than the original
uses.

It seems to be that MR has been replaced by the term Stockholm Syndrome.

I will explain the original meaning of ultraparadoxicality as simply as I can,
quoted from the Russin book I borrowed from my uncle, an advertising
excecutive at that time.

If you have a prisoner and you torture him using mental and physical methods,
he will undergo a strange transformation. The net effect of being held
incommunicado and being told that he will be shot dead at some time in the
near future, can cause him to change his attitude to his captors from an
initial hatred to to an attitude of respect and even friendship to his guards.
This can be helped by chemicals but will work very well without.
The best known example of this was the experience of Gary Powers the pilot of
a U2 spy plane which was shot down in 1960. Despite being a patriotic member
of the American military, he appeared on TV speaking in favour of the beliefs
of his captors. It took along time after his release before he was returned to
normal.

I can only suppose that the word ultraparadoxicality, was probably too ;ong
for
ordinary peopl;e to remember, let alone understand. Hence the change to
Stockholm Syndrome.
Ten years after this I got a degree in Motivation and Communication. Only a
simple degree aimed at getting people to buy things they might not normally
want. I am quite sure that versions are still in use as described aboove, by
law enforcement officers and on prisoners of the military.

Thwere was a lot more to Brain washing than just the simple example I have
given but I don't want o make this a very long bulletin which, probably won't
get an answer or a comment.

I heard it again on TV yesterday, not as part of advertising but the shorter,
Stockholm Syndrome notUltraparadoxicality..whatever you call it, it is a very
powerful technique.

If anyone knows a word longer than ultraparadoxicality. I wuld like to hear
it.

Hope this is not too boring. |I have thouht of sending this bull for years
but couldn't be bothered.

I suppose it is only of interest to linguists and psychologist so I am not
expecting any comments.

Kind regards.
