Hi Ian and all,
I can see my confusion if ever I should visit England. You start out in
agreement with whitewash being used to cover stains and imperfections and
then deviate from the course in it's application. Here "whitewashed"
doesn't come to mean "obliterated" as applied to a sports team, rather to
whitewash an issue or report means a coverup, or to pretty it up for
public consumption.
Your use of the apostrophe boggles my mind, to indicate a posession of
John as John' makes no sense to me, the S is missing as in John's. What
confuses some is the plural posessive as in Johns' when more than one
John is involved. Some use it incorrectly to indicate plurality, I find
the "double posessive" 73's most aggrivating. Good grief, at this rate
I'm going back to signing 30 just to confuse all of you.
I find your description of the government most amusing! I suppose one
must be bloody well hung to fornucate the public the way they do. Perhaps
you could say they're hung like ducks in a Chinese market, plucked,
deboned and pressed quite flat. Make of that what you will, chee shee kai
dai.
