-- Distribution survey
After last weeks request we got some feedback from people noting where
the all@gbr distrubution area reaches and I'd like to thank everyone who
replied.

Hopefully we can turn that into improving the robustness of the BBS
network.

The net ran from 20:00 to 21:08

-- Tiny-2 updates
After asking for manuals in the previous net, one was found and
progress made connecting the TNC to the radio. The major issue on TX
was a lack of modulation and that was handily dealt with by adjusting a
potentiometer in the device. Full connections have been made simply
driving the tiny-2 from Putty but RX still needs to be adjusted to make
the connections more robust.

The TNC in question here has a DCD expansion board so it should work
well with the open squelch on the Tait radio data socket but that extra
board also covers one of the adjustment pots.

The manual contains a full guide to calibrating it so that will be
worked through.

Another station is working well with a Tiny-2 but it's not working when
talking to linbpq as the remote station. Connects are issued by the
Tiny-2 but the response from linbpq is not recognised as an ACK so it
just continually sends connect requests.

The problem from last week with the Tiny-2 only communicating with a
computer one way was resolved by doing a factory reset of the TNC.

-- New node in Broxburn
A new packet user has set up in Broxburn and is able to make direct
connections to additional existing stations which should make that
region more robustly connected to the packet network.

The setup there is currently a PC running SoundModem into a FT-857, but
that is likely to be replaced with a Raspberry Pi running SoundModem
into a Tait.

Optoisolators between the computer and the radio keep things safe and
it is essentially a similar set up to running data modes from the
computer on HF.

-- Motorola DM3400
This radio was discussed last week and unfortunately no progress has
been made getting it connected to a NinoTNC. We hope for more updates
soon.

-- More 2m Packet in the Aberdeenshire area
Another node has tried a 2m link into the growing 2m network in
Aberdeen but without any luck. Settings and frequencies were discussed
and seemed to be correct so investigation is ongoing.

The 70cm network also seems to have changed with the preferred node
vanishing and a new link being established. So far no particular
explanation.

-- More work on a node south of the Pentlands
Last week's work has progressed though not without issues. A first
attempt made the Lexan 898 lock up completely. That was resolved with a
hard reset.

Better experimentation is being done thanks to the delivery of a RJ45
breakout board that lets connections be adjusted quickly without
needing to solder anything. The device was found cheaply on eBay.

Related to that was a question about the power output of MB7NKL which
is 25w. It can be heard very clearly which promises a good connection
back.

-- 4m question
Some recommendations for 4m antennas were sought as a station in
Edinburgh is looking at setting up on that band. Even if the stations
in the borders are too far away there is another station that can set
up on 4m and might manage to make a dual band portable node.

The moonraker SQRM458 was the recommended antenna of choice although
several options are available.

People are welcome to join the net next week. If you don't have DMR but
want to put in a topic for discussion, you can reply to this bulletin
or to me directly and we'll add it to next week.

If you happen to know someone who is interested in packet but isn't
set up far enough to get this message, please pass it along and let them
know about the net.
