MAY 2015 MISSOURI SECTION NEWS
DALE BAGLEY, K0KY MO SM

The start of 2015 has been a good one for the Missouri Section.
On March 20th, I was joined by ARRL Midwest Division Assistant
Director Brian Short, KCOBS, in presenting Steve Kraske and Beth
Lipoff of KCUR-FM in Kansas City the 2014 Bill Leonard Award.
The Bill Leonard Award was for the best audio media programming
related to Amateur Radio in 2014. The program was titled
Exploring Ham Radio in a Digital World and was an interview on
Steve Kraske and Beth Lipoff's Up To Date show with Brian Short,
KC0BS, who was the winner of the Phil McGan Public Relations
award in 2014. The recipients were very pleased to receive the
award and Steve Steigman, Chief of Broadcast Operations gave
those attending the presentation a tour of KCUR-FM. You can
check out the April Issue of Current Contacts at

At the Ararat Shrine Hambash ARRL Forum, Keith Kaiser, WA0TJT,
was presented with the first in the Missouri Section ARRL Amateur
Radio Service to Scouting award. I was pleased to present the
certificate and to be joined in that presentation by the Midwest
Director Rod Blocksome, K0DAS. Keith has done an outstanding job
with Scouting and introducing Amateur Radio to Scouts in the
Kansas City Area. Mr. Kaiser is the 14th in the nation to
receive this honor. Congratulations to Keith Kaiser, WA0TJT and
to all those that supported his nomination.

APRIL 2015 HAMFEST REPORT

The Ararat Shrine Amateur Radio Club's Hambash 2015 was a great
success. Chet Hallberg, K0TCB part of the Ararat Shrine Hambash
leadership organized a strong program of forums. The forums
included the ARRL, MARS, Ham 101, the Liberty Memorial and in
another room the forum on Motorola Programming, the Council of
Clubs meeting and the USAF MARS. In addition there was a large
number flea market vendors complimented by several well supplied
Commercial vendors. One of the great parts of the Ararat Shrine
Hambash is the participation of the Emergency Operations groups
in the Kansas City area and as a show case for the Area Scouts
and other youth groups that have had presentations about
robotics/drone/lots of other areas of interest.

AFFILIATED CLUB NEWS KEITH HAYE, WE0G, ACC

Mike Bogard, KDOFW, reports that there will be an HF Mobile
Shootout test on June 6 2015 at the QTH of Mike Barelli, W0MAF in
the Northern part of Independence, Mo. The shootout site is near
291 Highway and 24 Highway not far from the Twin Drive outdoor
theater. The shootout will start at 12:00 Saturday and will be on
40 meters around 7.230 mhz. Some rules are: 1. Any street legal
vehicle with a road-worthy antenna with the total height not to
exceed 13' 6" and that the capacity hat can't exceed 8' in
diameter. This mobile shootout will be the first one and will be
given by some of the guy's with the INDEPENDENCE FM Amateur Radio
Club along with Don Reed KOIFO who has spoken lately to some of
the local clubs on antennas.

The Callaway Amateur Radio League and the Boone County ARES
Group, are assisting Ryan Raney, KE5USI and his group called the
Columbia Gadget Works to track a lost high altitude balloon that
was launched on April 26, 2015. Four of the CGW are licensed
Amateurs. Their Balloon flight was intended to be an entry for
the global space balloon challenge.
(https://www.balloonchallenge.org ) Ryan explained that his group
had launched a balloon from Long View Park in Columbia, MO. They
had expected it the balloon to burst at about 90,000 feet and the
payload to land in an area near Hermann, MO. The payload was a
Styrofoam cooler carrying a GoPro and Canon point and shoot
camera with CGW Dragon Two on each side with an orange parachute.
The tracking telemetry had issues because the last received
packet showed the balloon at a position over Fulton, MO at a
negative 23,000 feet. Since the packet was copied in Lebanon, MO
the balloon actually was still at a significant altitude. The
balloon, that used the callsign KD0MSL-11, did have a secondary
tracker set up but that has failed too as they did not realize it
wouldn't operate over 23,000 feet. It's a SPOT satellite tracker
which either disabled itself after it went above 23,000 feet or
landed in a position that was not facing skyward. Ryan requested
assistance from the BCARES group in hopes that they could put him
in contact with someone who runs an aprs station from home, an
EOC, or mobile that may have logs of the balloon's position as it
didn't make it to any igates after 11:36. The BCARES contacted
the CARL Group to bring them into the search for the lost high
altitude balloon. Ryan and his group would really like to get the
cameras back. Anyone that could help find the missing balloon
should contact Ryan at his e-mail address of ryanraney@gmail.com
.

The Heart of America Radio Club newsletter the Harc Herald
reported that Don Reed, K0IFO will be presenting a program on
Antenna Modeling using EZNEC. This is a follow-up program to
last month's program on demonstrating the electrical
characteristics of several common amateur radio designs. Members
were encouraged to bring their laptop computers to the meeting
and to load the software and follow along in hands-on fashion.
