Hello Warren, and for want of a better thread..."event" as for those
in Europe, it was an event, as were all the wars.

Special event station? ... ph well? ...As in some geritol operating
from somewhere, but not really, as who cares? Almost like the
2meter net I was on tonight, where other then checkins, something
of news or what...but only a checkin for "3" minutes...then ...thats
it, as the geritol slushed thru the words of the net, fumbling and
mumbling, and oh mmmm...thats how it's going to net...just too old
retirement...then it is an event...maybe?

Canada as it existed then was only upper Canada <english> and
lower canada <French> then the Atlantic colonies, and nothing to
bif them together...not even "Hockey Night in Canada" and the CBC.

The US had reason to declare war, but did so even when a peace solution
was worked out between reperesentatives of the US and Britain. And
besides they couldn't and wouldn't side with NApoleon...but though
land...easy pickings while the Lion was engaged elsewhere.

They didn't burn Ottawa. The original name of Ottawa, was too busy
as a loggibng town...big money there, and well the US forces never
got passed anywhere to go there, let alone find it.

Yes heard that idea offered. I also hear even a different POV
in other parts of the US, but counter to those further away, of
it being a second war of independence....Gee...they'd want a second
holiday.

Yeah heard that one too, and not too far off 1791 thinking and after
years to think that way in some areas of the US.

Ghandi was an unusual man, and ahead of his time, and his dream ended
in his death. He didn't see what he wanted achieved, and it looks
like it will never be reality. The Royal family was so close to him
and I remember the frindships they had by the articles and what they
said before he died. Some of his ideals have been I feel the basis
for the British Commonwealth of Nations. better then an empire.

The comparison to Vietnam, is interesting.

I think it is interesting, that David Parish, when the US Government
needed money, and their source was trade, which was dead due to the
Napoleonic War, he stepped up and financed the US Government, securing
from them no military operations in his area, which was the
St Lawrence Valley, and it also was part of Canada...so all along this
neutral area... nothing happened and trade and people moved freely,
and it was done for good reason. His interests in the area were
threatened with British Forces, as well American, and he worked with
bothsides to get it Neutral.

President Monroe's War of 1812 was not popular in the Northern states
and the New England states nearly left the union over it. They also
traded with the Canadian Colonies, and sold to them.

There are some interesting accounts and signs of the protest against
declaring war, as there is during the war. Nope Vietnam never
saw protests and states threathening to leave the union like this
1812 flop.

Yeah. Money or being rich or having important friends, and you can
escape even a muder rap, as I saw here with a Michael Bryant who
killed a cyclist, and it was seen by witnesses and on Utube.

HE got away with murder! Not a popular person in Ontario for many
reasons.

What I get with these bits of history of this period is a better
idea of the times. Even long after a family was ashamed to admit
or even return the flag from Fort Niagara, and it is an impressive
flag. A few years ago, it sort of made it's way over to the US
no questions asked, and US hitorians are happy to have it, as the
family that had it so long, is happy to get it back.

Period events, here have been interesting affairs, with the
participation both sides. So have been the storys. People
then as now do not blame their neighbour on the other side of
the border. If anything it has strengthened their ties.
