Hi Bob and others
Bob you must be buying from a different China over there in the West to
what we do in the East.

Clothing bought from that source is poorly finished, and made from
inferior material that wears out extraordinarily quickly.

Just recently in a moment of madness I bought a Chinese metal
shear/folder/roller metalworking machine to build chassis etc for
electronics projects..

Just to list a few of it's faults were holes not tapped out properly so
adjusting screws could not be adjusted, hardened cutting edges that were
actually not hardened. Main bearings that rotated in the bearing holder
and were actually seized on the shaft and so on and so on.

That machine cost me a heap of cash and was practically useless. The
selling company offered to take it back but this didn't help as they would
only give me another one just as bad.

Continuing with a comment on this topic by some one in the UK, I sometimes
get dragged through our local shopping mall by the xyl, where we have one
of those $2 cheapo shops. These specialise in imported rubbish from mostly
Chinese sources. Its very informative to stand by the check out counter
and listen to the number of complaints from customers about items that
didn't even work straight from the packet.

One item that seemed to be attracting a lot of complaint was a special the
shop was selling consisting of a bulk pack of a quantity of about 50 AA
cells. Lots of people were complaining that they were flat when the
packet was opened. I grabbed a couple of the returned cells from the
checkout lady, (with her permission) and took them home to test.

The cells showed up as full voltage and would give about the normal
discharge power (AH) expected for reasonable AA cells when discharged over
a period of time at less than 10mA rate.

However increase the discharge current to more than about 8 mA and the
cells would shut down. The internal impedance was just through the roof. I
didn't cut one open to have a look but they were obviously short of some
material in the internal construction of the electrodes.
Of course being just post Christmas most people were probably buying them
for toys needing a fair bit of current and they just wouldn't work for
that function.

Anyhow I did OK out of the returns as they powered my cheapo "Australian
made" AM transistor radio which I have had for about 45 years and is still
going strong when the current cheaper imports are long consigned to the
bin.

A story about Asian imports was written up in a local electronics magazine
a few years ago where it was shown in photos that the insides of an
imported arc welding machine had pieces of timber jammed into the case to
hold the insides together and the mains windings insulation was paper more
suited to telecoms underground cables than heavy current high temperature
workshop equipment.
