Hurricanes and Houses

"Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine, and acts
upon them, may be compared to a wise man, who built his
     house upon the rock.

And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the wind
blew, and burst against that house; and yet it did not fall,
for it had been founded upon the rock.

And everyone who hears these words of Mine, and does not act
upon them, will be like a foolish man, who built his house
     upon the sand.

And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds
blew and burst against that house; and it fell, and great
was its fall." --Jesus, Matthew 7:24-27

God has been testing America with horrendous hurricanes and the
images of destruction have been heart-wrenching. It's an awful
thing to see what so many have built and invested their lives
into -- just be washed or blown away. But it reminded me of how
Christ ended one of His greatest sermons (Matthew 5-7) -- and
that everyone is building a house that shall be tried by
hurricane forces. Will what we have built, stand or fall?

Jesus teaches that there are two foundations upon which every
person builds their lives -- either the sand of the world or the
rock of God's truth. A person's life is an investment of time,
energy, strength and work. The world says build for yourself,
pursue "your" dreams, buy things which will make you happy. It
leads you to invest in what God warns must pass away, things that
promise much but in the end, deliver little (1 John 2:15-17;
Matthew 13:22). It lures or coerces you to follow its varying
philosophies (sand) in disregard for the stated will and coherent
truth of God (the rock). Jesus warns that such a house built on
this unstable and shifting foundation will fall when it is tried
by the torrential rains, winds and floods that will come -- and
the fall will be great -- a tragic loss.

He warns that this will be the sad end of all who do not "act
upon" (practice or obey) His teachings. That will be tragic for
those who grew up in the church and heard those teachings -- and
perhaps even acknowledged them as true -- but didn't build their
lives upon them. They heard the truth but didn't let it "sink
in" nor change their ways; they deceive themselves through
inaction (see James 1:22-25).

I'm thankful that hurricanes don't reach South Dakota but as a
minister of the Gospel and the words of my Lord, I must warn
every man that every life shall face a wreaking storm that will
try it -- and Jesus calls us to build on what will sustain for
eternity -- His Truth taught and His truth personified (John
14:6).

On what foundation are you building your life? Will your house
stand? (John 3:16)
