The Great Light

"_but in the future he will honor Galilee of the Gentiles,
by the way of the sea, along the Jordan-

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light!

On those living in the land of the shadow of death a light
     has dawned." --Isaiah 9:1b-2; 700 B.C.

Christmas is a season of lights in the darkness -- that
beautifully illuminate Christian homes. A light spoken of 700
years before the coming of Christ through the Jewish prophet and
cosmically announced by a singular star to wise men and
shepherds. It was the Light that is Jesus who would shine on all
generations to come (now some 2,000 years now) that would walk
the shores of Galilee performing miracles and calling fishermen
to reach a Gentile world beyond Israel's rejection (John 1:4-11).
And the effect of that Light since His coming is beyond measure
and calculation.

How many hospitals have been built in His name for the healing of
the sick. How many orphans have been taken in and cared for
because of His love. How many of the world's hungry have been
fed because He loved and broke bread. How many homes have been
established and strengthened because He established family by His
Word and command. How many strangers have been befriended
because He commanded "love thy neighbor" -- and even thy enemy.
The love He commanded, the life and hope He gave -- have touched
every generation as light that pierces darkness.

That light shines best when embraced -- but has benefited
cultures even when dimmed and diluted. How much more will be the
benefit and glory when He returns to reign (Isaiah 9:7) -- when
His dominion is complete (Daniel 7:14). There will be both
burning of evil's stubble and healing in His wings (rays) when
the Sun rises in His day (MalachI 4; Rev.6:17). He is the Light
of the world -- and He is coming again.

Shine your Christmas lights -- but better, let Him shine in your
hearts. He will drive the darkness away (John 8:12). He will
bring the joy and peace that angels announced when shepherds
fields were lit with glory the very first Christmas night (Luke
2:9-14).
