Hi All.
I don't think we have been conned. If one looks at the principle of stereo,
as related to, say, an orchestra on stage. The idea is to create the same
sound effect, ie vocalist in the centre, strings to the right, piano to the
left or whatever. So, to create the vocalist in the centre, all that is
required is to have equal balance from each channel. Of course, to achieve
this in your living room you must have sufficient seperation of the speakers
for each channel, and be sitting in a line out from the centre point between
the speakers from each channel. Not sure where the use of 6 channel devices
come into it though, except maybe for sounds other than music.
