MORE SNAKE OIL

Thanks to Kevin VK2YPZ for his "Stereo" snake oil story.

Here's another one of similar ilk, but to do with antennas.

Back in the late 1950's television broadcasting came into being in this
country.

(Incidentally, nicely in time for the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne,
Victoria.)

This item was written up in a well known magazine then known as "Radio and
Hobbies". (Later the magazine name changed to "Electronics Australia".)

It told about an Amateur Radio operator who had wandered into a store
where television sets and antennas were for sale.

He spent some time looking at the various types of antennas on display and
eventually along came a salesman.

When queried as to whether or not he needed any assistance the "amateur"
replied that he was merely looking at the antennas.

He then added a comment to the effect that he was thinking of perhaps
making one himself.

To this the salesman said. "You could't possibly do that sir."

"Why on earth not?" asked the amateur.

"Well sir, if you look at the antennas you will notice that the tubes
forming the antenna are sealed at the ends." said the salesman.

"Most interesting." Came the reply.

"Yes." said the salesman, continuing with an explanation. "Those tubes
contain a special resonant gas, without which the antenna would not work
properly."

"That is certainly amazing." replied the Amateur Radio operator, somewhat
bemused.

He then went on his way wondering where he may be able to purchase some of
that "special resonant gas", and thus improve the operation of all his own
home built antennas.

Regards,

Ian
