Hello again Ian ... if you answer me you might be wearing
something..hahahaha. But ..your topic "THINK" is a great
vehicle to kick off a few thoughts to create some topics.

>I was only making a minor point about our UK political
>parties.

I have no idea of the UK political system...the closest
I ever came to it was knowing Strafford Cripps
< mmm hope I spelled the name right> as a boy, and he
wrote a note to my parents before they came to canada.

Here our main business center is Bay Street in Toronto
so they usually support the Conservatives or the Liberals
and our third party the New Democrats...and then there is
other fringe partys... I image you might have the same
as we did model our government on the Parliamentary
system....complete with a load of freeloaders called
the Senate < house of Lords >.

>We had one party in power between 1979 and 1997, then
>the other one took over from 1997 to the present.
>They obviously thought that, if the previous party stayed
>in for 18 years they must have done something right and
>copied them.

Sounds like our federal and provincial governments.

Sounds like a paln. Why not keep taking credit with
a few minor adjustments that do nothing but make the
public think it is them at work? Work...whats that?
Jeez here after a term they get a pension for life.

cash cow...

>This leaves the ordinary voter in a quandry. I am not alone
>in deciding that I will not vote for either as they are very
>similar.

Agreed. Sad state of affairs.

>Some people vote for minority parties with no real chance of
>getting elected - that's their choice but it does make the
>party in power either adopt some of their policies or, at
>least, pay lip sevice to them.

Minor governments work, as they must talk to the other partys
or dissolve government. It then can be another expensive
election or the head of state can ask another leader to form
a government if he can..or then it is an election.

The only thing I see with minority parties is...that given
a chance..one of these wannabees will skip from the party
and join either the liberal or conservative government...and
that really ticks me off.

>That's it in a nutshell. I will probably get some
>disagreement but I am just trying to be dispassionate.

My nutshell...is I have no desire or plans to vote for
anyone in the natiomal or provincial elections. In
one election I knew personally all the candidates they
are my friends, and it would have been hard for me.

I do try to vote for the town council..but then thats an
easy chore... there is no partys in the local coucil
or I hope not.

Why disagreement? It is your opinion. I have to
accept what your opinion is ... if we disagreed, then
we could carry on...but if I ran out of things to say
I guess that would be that...if I hadn't changed your
opinion you mine...then I would leave it at that...

Sorry not into a name calling gutter typing match...another
reason why you never see me in postings to a few on
here for their antics.

>On your final point. Yes our turnout is falling too.
>I don't think it is down to 25% yet though.

Ok Ian ... I guess thats all from me. The average for
the 4 ridings was less then 30%... and yes you are correct
the one riding with only 25% was a shocker.

Those that follow all this are always now on the talk shows
saying this and that and why ... But I feel you in your
short posting hit it right on.

Carry on mate.... good thread. Thank you for your reply
back. Will keep reading along.

Happy easter Ian....

Peter
