Brian

I have both Vista 32 and 64 bit laptops. I had no problem getting anything
to work with the 32 bit machine. The 64 bit machine was a bit harder. I
had to wait for the USb/Serial folks to write drivers. Once that was done,
all is working fine.

My only suggestion is that you take another look at UI-view settings. If
the other terminal programs are working ok, then it's probably not a
USB/Serial issue. Everything points to a UI-View setting issue. I would
check all your filters, both on UI-View and on the UI-View server. Maybe
there is a setting on the server that is preventing it from sending you
anything. If your using filters, make sure you are using the Lat/Long
settings correctly and if needed you have the minus sign prior to the
longitude.

Good Luck

Hi Jan,

I couldn't find a laptop with the same features and price that also
had a com port, much less two. The question I'm asking myself is why
I let my friend talk me into buying one with Vista OS?

It was assigning com4,5,6,7 to the com ports. I re-configured com4
and 5 to be com 1 and com 2 just to see if that would help with
UI-View, but it didn't

In the U.S. at least, it's now virtually impossible to find computers
(laptop or desktop) with serial ports in normal consumer retail channels.

You have to go through specialized commercial/industrial/govt systems
integrators or resellers to get machines with actual serial ports (and
pay a lot more). I paid probably 50% more for my Panasonic Toughbook
laptop (that has a real serial port) than I would have for a machine
with more RAM, CPU speed and hard disk capacity in the normal consumer
channels. And I had to go though an industrial systems
integrator/consultant outfit to get it.

I just downgraded? Or did I upgrade? My wife New laptop to XP. Just couldn't
get everything at home and her office happy with Vista. When you call most
of the support lines at her company the first thing they say is they don't
support Vista nor do they ever intend to.

Does your Laptop have a pcmcia or PCI Express slot? If so you can buy a card
with serial ports that act more like original hardware than the USB dongle.

The server settings/configuration/filters would be irrelevant to serial
port problems since you don't connect to the Internet through a serial
port. (Unless you still connect to the Internet with an external dialup
modem connected via a COM port!)

My suspicion is a serial port cabling or handshaking issue. Various
programs vary wildly in how they respond (or don't respond) to missing
or incorrectly wired serial cable conductors. Some programs respect
the CTS/RTS/DSR/DTR handshaking lines very literally, while others
totally ignore them and will work with a simple TX data/RX data/common
three-wire serial cable.

Hence the
"this-program-works-perfectly-while-that-one-doesn't-on-the-exact-same-hardware"
syndrome.

What kind of serial cable are you using? How many conductors
end-to-end? Are any of the handshaking lines looped back locally at the
plug(s) instead of being wired end-to-end? Do you have a serial port
breakout box so you can experiment with pulling the handshake lines
up/down/open, etc?

Not quite, but close. Dell still sells some versions with true serial ports.
The 'D' series Latitude laptops are still available and have a serial port
(D600, D800 series).

Desktop's are more problematic. Dells XPS series used to have a serial port,
but no longer.

On the other hand, 2 and 4 serial port expansion cards for desktops are readily
available and inexpensive. These serial ports are 'traditional' and work as you
would expect.

Yes; it's the same here on this side of "the Pond".
However, I bought a Dell laptop with a serial port just before
Christmas.
I think that you can still order Dells with a serial port.
For ham radio use, I'd think that it's a good idea to look for COM
port options in the computer...
But I'll leave this subject as it's not very UI-View related (except
that UI-View needs a serial port which works, and as we all know,
UI-View isn't being upgraded)
