It all depends on what character-set you are using.
Upto ASCII #128 things are pretty standard but trouble starts when using
the "extended ASCII" where just about anything goes.

What character set you use is up to you.

If none of the "standard" sets are not to your liking then why not write
your own personalised set ?
I recently browsed through an article in PCPlus magazine that leads you
through the process.
