In reply to Sten,ZS6CFC, regarding everything ageing, specifically
floppies when they have been looked after,i.e., kept sealed, away from
heat and dust.

My personal belief is that magnetic media can be subject to the Earth's
magnetic field corrupting them.

In the case of videotape, if not used, you can get adhesion causing
problems, as can happen with film stored for a long time.

The only thing so far, that seems to affect laser discs is getting
scratched so, if kept in a dark, dust free environment and handled with
care, they should last a long time.

I have a memory of a man, who was involved in electronics, telling me
about
storing discs within metal containers so as to keep them free of magnetic
fields. This was long before VCRs. I think he was referring to VTR and
music on high quality, reel to reel tape.

On a personal point. I am just about to transfer a recording on VCR to
DVD.
It was originally done on 16mm film, then copied to Super 8 film, then
video cassette. Anyone who sees VCR prices dropping through the floor will
probably agree it's the best thing to copy to the latest format storage
medium.

I have already scanned 100s of photos to CD, some of them were negatives
but my scanner handles them. Ditto with some sound recordings. I have
found that, if you format a CD-R as 'music' then copy recordings in .WMA
format and finalise, then any CD player will play them just like any
ordinary CD.
The wierd thing is, if you can store 30 discs worth of music in .WMA
format or 40 discs worth of .MPG on one CD, why don't they do that in the
first place?

I know most people will know that already, but I was just playing around
and found out about it.
NB, I havent't got 30 CDs to copy to one but I bet some people have, like
the stations who were talking about cleaning heads in their CD changers.

I hope I'm still around when everything ever recorded will be able to fit
on a 'Star Trek' "Data Crystal."
